Biblical Context

First Peter was written by Peter, one of Jesus’s closest disciples and a key leader in the early church. He wrote this letter to Christians spread across various regions in Asia Minor who were facing real pressure and tough times, often for their faith. Peter’s goal was to strengthen their hearts, remind them of their true identity in Christ, and give them hope. He told them to live holy lives, even when things got hard, and to always remember the great plan God had for them through Jesus Christ.

Key Word Study

Let’s look at the word “blessing” in 1 Peter 3:9. The Greek word used here is eulogia (εὐλογία). This word means praise, speaking good things, or a gift from God. It’s actually where our English word ‘eulogy’ comes from. In this verse, it speaks of a specific, good word spoken over someone, a divine favor, or a gift that brings well-being, success, and happiness. It’s God’s good intention and provision for you, something He actively puts into your life.

Your Unbreakable Blessing in Christ

Some people complain about their life, thinking bad things happen because they’re under a curse. But if you’re a Christian, God’s Word is really clear: you can’t be cursed. There’s no family curse, no ancestral curse, or any curse from an enemy that can work against you. Only blessings are allowed to take hold and win in your life.

Think again about what we read in our opening scripture: you were called to inherit a blessing. As 1 Peter 3:9 puts it, “Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.” This is your destiny, your true position.

A New Creation, Above All Dark Works

The Bible also tells us, “…If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature…” (2 Corinthians 5:17). You’re not the same person you were before. You’re a new creature, standing way above Satan and everything he tries to do. So, it doesn’t matter if you were threatened by a witch doctor or a voodoo priest; no spell or fortune-telling can work against you. The Bible says, “Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel…” (Numbers 23:23). This promise holds true for you as spiritual Israel.

God’s Word is true and unchanging. The scripture in Numbers 23:19-23 confirms this: “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? [20] Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it. [21] He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: the LORD his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them. [22] God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn. [23] Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!” This shows God’s plan for you is fixed: He has blessed you, and He won’t change His mind.

Freedom Through Knowing God’s Truth

You have to get this: truth you don’t know won’t help you, but truth you do know puts you in charge. If you don’t know what God has said about you, you could walk in fear and feel trapped. But really knowing God’s Word sets you free. Jesus said, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

Christ Redeemed You from Every Curse

You don’t need anyone to “lift” a curse off you. Christ already blessed you. In Him, you’ve been born again into the glorious freedom of God’s children; you’re free forever! Think about it: if you were cursed, who would make it happen? The devil? You have more power than he and all his demons put together.

How about God? He would never allow a curse against His own children. Actually, Christ already took care of every curse for you. Galatians 3:13-14 tells us, “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: [14] That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” Because of Jesus, you now stand in the blessing of Abraham.

The only Christian who might live as if under a curse is the one who ignores or looks down on the Word of God. To neglect, reject, or despise the Word is like stepping out from the covering of divine truth, and that, in itself, becomes a problem, for the Bible says, “Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed…” (Proverbs 13:13). It’s not God placing a curse, but a result of not standing under His Word.

Your Inheritance of All Spiritual Blessings

But as long as you’re in Christ, listening to His Word and letting the Spirit guide you, you’re untouchable and walk only in blessings. You live in victory and move with the courage of your inheritance in Christ. As Ephesians 1:3 states, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.” You are blessed and given power to rule. Glory to God!
