Biblical Context

The book of 1 Samuel tells a crucial story in Israel’s past, showing the shift from a time led by judges to the beginning of kingship. Samuel, a prophet and the last judge, plays a big part in this change. He anoints both Saul, Israel’s first king, and later David, the king after God’s own heart. The book covers about a hundred years, focusing on Saul’s rise and fall, and David’s early life, his anointing, his time as a fugitive, and his preparation to rule.

When we get to 1 Samuel 30, David isn’t yet king. He’s been running from King Saul for years and has ended up living among the Philistines. While David and his men are away on a raid, the Amalekites attack their camp at Ziklag, burn it down, and carry off all their women and children, including David’s two wives. David and his men are heartbroken and ready to turn on him. But David finds strength in the Lord his God. He seeks God’s direction and gets a clear answer to pursue the Amalekites.

As they chase after the raiders, they find an Egyptian man left behind because he was sick. This is where our verse comes in. David’s men find him, give him food and water, and bring him back to strength. Then David asks him, “To whom belongest thou?” This question isn’t just about figuring out who his master is; it’s about his identity, his loyalty, and his place in the world. It’s a direct question about ownership and allegiance at a critical moment for David, leading him to the information he needs to get back what was taken.

Key Word Study

Let’s look at the word “belongest” from our scripture, “To whom belongest thou?” In the original Hebrew, the phrase is “לְמִי אַתָּה” (l’mi attah), which literally means “to whom you.” The word “אַתָּה” (attah) is the singular “you.” The sense of “belongest” comes from the interrogative particle “לְמִי” (l’mi), meaning “to whom.” It’s not a single verb but a construction that asks about ownership, allegiance, or origin. It cuts right to the issue of identity and service. It’s asking, “Whose property are you? Who is your lord? Who claims you?” This idea of belonging carries big weight in the Bible, especially when we talk about who we serve and whose we are. It speaks to loyalty and where your ultimate commitment lies.

No Neutral Ground

The spiritual life doesn’t allow for sitting on the fence. It’s one or the other. You can’t be half-in and half-out. We’re either lined up under the flag of Prince Immanuel, ready to serve and fight His battles, or we’re slaves to the dark prince, Satan. There’s no third option, no middle road to walk.

To Whom Do You Belong?

That big question, “To whom belongest thou?”, is for you right now, reader. Let me help you think through your answer. Have you been “born again”? If you have, you are Christ’s. But without that new birth, you can’t be His. It’s a crucial starting point.

Where Do You Put Your Trust?

Think about this: In whom do you trust? It’s a simple question with a big answer. For those who believe in Jesus are the sons of God. Your trust shows whose family you’re a part of, whose protection you stand under. If your trust is truly in Jesus, then you’re one of God’s children.

Whose Work Are You Doing?

We all serve someone, whether we realize it or not. Whose work are you doing? You can be sure you’re serving your master, because whoever you serve, you’re saying they are your lord. Your actions, your efforts, your daily grind—they all point to who you’ve decided to obey.

Who Do You Spend Time With?

Take a look at your closest friends, your everyday company. What company do you keep? If you are Jesus’s, you’ll naturally connect with those who wear the cross’s uniform. It’s just like the old saying, “Birds of a feather flock together.” Your company shows a lot about who you are and where your heart is.

What Do You Talk About?

Consider your daily conversations. What is your conversation? Is it heavenly or is it earthly? What have you learned from your Master? Servants learn much from the masters they work for. If you’ve spent your time with Jesus, people will see it in you. It’ll be said of you, just as it was of Peter and John in Acts 4:13, “They took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” Your talk shows what’s been filling your mind and heart.

A Crucial Choice

We’re pushing this question on you again, “To whom belongest thou?” Answer honestly before you go to sleep tonight. If you are not Christ’s, you are in a very hard service. Run away from your cruel master! Get into the service of the Lord of Love, and you’ll have a life full of blessings. It’s a choice with eternal weight.

Living as Christ’s Own

If you are Christ’s, let me give you four pieces of advice to help you live it out:

Obey Him

You belong to Jesus—so obey Him. Let His word be your law. Let His wish be your will. Your life should show a clear submission to His leadership in everything you do.

Love Him Deeply

You belong to the Beloved, so love Him. Let your heart wrap itself around Him. Let your whole soul be completely filled with Him. This isn’t just a feeling; it’s a deep devotion that guides all your affections.

Trust Him Completely

You belong to the Son of God, so trust Him. Don’t find rest anywhere else but in Him. Put all your weight on Him, knowing He is strong enough to carry you through anything. Your peace comes from truly leaning on Him.

Be Decided for Him

You belong to the King of kings, so be decided for Him. Don’t waiver or hesitate. Make a firm choice to stand with Him, no matter what. Let your loyalty be clear and strong for all to see.

When you live this way, without any mark on your forehead, everyone will know exactly to whom you belong. Your life itself will speak the truth of your allegiance.
