Biblical Context
Psalm 46 comes from the Sons of Korah, a group of Levite musicians tasked with temple service. These psalms often deal with trust in God during times of national trouble. It’s a song for when the world feels like it’s falling apart – mountains shaking, waters roaring, nations in an uproar. The psalm makes it clear that even when chaos reigns, God is right there in the middle of it all, a strong tower for His people. It’s a declaration of God’s unshakable presence and power, a promise that He steps in with strength when everything else gives way.
Key Word Study
Let’s look at the word “help” from Psalm 46:1. In Hebrew, this word is עֶזְרָה (`ezrah`). It means more than just a little assistance; it speaks of strong aid, support, and active intervention, often in a military sense. It’s the kind of help you get when you’re truly desperate and someone comes with real power to rescue you. It’s not just a suggestion or a gentle nudge; it’s a powerful, saving action. When the psalm says God is a “very present help,” it means He’s not just available, but actively, powerfully, and immediately stepping in to save and support you.
Don’t Just Look, Use Him
God’s blessings, the good things He gives, aren’t just for you to look at. They’re for you to grab onto and use. Think about it: Jesus, our Lord, is given to us, not just to admire, but for our day-to-day living. Many times, you don’t use Jesus the way you really should. He’s not meant to be a display item; He’s meant to be lived with, used, and depended on every single moment.
Tell Him Everything
When trouble hits, why don’t you tell Jesus all your pain? He has a heart that feels with you, and He can comfort and make things better. Instead, you go to all your friends, everyone but your very best Friend. You tell your story everywhere except right into the heart of your Lord. He’s waiting for you to come to Him first, to lay your burdens down.
Use the Cleansing Fountain
Are you feeling weighed down by today’s mistakes? Here is a fountain filled with blood. Use it, saint, use it. Has that feeling of guilt crept back in? Jesus’ grace, the kind that makes you new, is there for you again and again. Don’t wait. Go to Him right away for a fresh start.
Lean on His Strength
Do you feel weak? He is your strength. So, why don’t you lean on Him? Don’t try to carry everything yourself. He’s strong enough for you and all your needs. When you feel like you can’t go on, that’s exactly when you should let Him carry you.
Put on His Righteousness
Do you feel exposed or like you’re not good enough? Come here, soul, put on the robe of Jesus’ righteousness. Don’t just stand there looking at it; wear it. Take off your own attempts to be good, and take off your fears too. Put on that bright, clean linen, because it was made for you to wear, to cover you completely.
Call the Beloved Physician
Are you feeling sick, worn down, or unwell? Pull the night-bell of prayer and call for the Beloved Physician! He will give you the medicine that will make you feel alive again. He’s always on call, ready to bring healing and restoration to your soul and spirit.
Ask Your Rich Kinsman
You might be poor in spirit or in your own resources, but you have “a kinsman, a mighty man of wealth.” He is Jesus. What? Won’t you go to Him and ask Him to give you some of His great abundance? He gave you this promise: you will be joint heir with Him, and He’s made over all that He is and all that He has to be yours. Don’t be shy; His wealth is for you.
He Loves to Be Used
There’s nothing Christ dislikes more than for His people to just show Him off, and not actually use Him for real life. He loves it when we employ Him, when we bring our troubles, our needs, our sins to Him. The more burdens we place on His shoulders, the more we will see His worth, and the more precious He will become to us. Don’t hold back or keep Him at a distance.
Let’s be simple with Him, then,
Not backward, stiff, or cold,
As though our Bethlehem could be
What Sinai was of old.
