Biblical Context

The Apostle Paul wrote the letter of 2 Corinthians to the church in Corinth. He wrote it from a place of intense difficulty and real challenge in his ministry. He had faced a lot of opposition, misunderstanding, and even physical suffering. He was dealing with people in the Corinthian church who questioned his authority and his calling. In this letter, Paul isn’t just defending himself; he’s also explaining what Christian ministry really is and how God works through people who feel weak or broken. The letter talks about God’s comfort when things are tough and the amazing way He uses ordinary people to spread His message.

Key Word Study

Let’s look at the word power from 2 Corinthians 4:7. The Greek word here is dynamis (δύναμις). It means strength, ability, or might. We get our English word “dynamite” from it, giving us an idea of its explosive force! In this verse, dynamis isn’t talking about human strength or skill. It’s about God’s own, God-given strength working through us. It’s the kind of might that lets you do things way beyond what you could do on your own. Paul makes it plain: this strength isn’t from us. It’s God’s, put inside our weak human bodies, so everyone can see that God truly is at work.

Because Jesus lives, you, me, and everyone who believes in Him has truly amazing news to share with others. That same good news, the gospel, which saved us, can and really must save them too. And the job of telling that gospel falls to us. It doesn’t matter if we feel ready or not, the responsibility is ours.

Think about Peter and John. When these guys faced the Sanhedrin, the top religious court, everyone was shocked. They were just ordinary guys, untrained laymen. Yet, they were so good with Scripture, and even more, they really knew what it meant. They were simple fishermen, working-class people, the kind you’d call salt-of-the-earth. This doesn’t mean they couldn’t read or write. But it does mean they hadn’t gone to special rabbinical schools or spent their whole lives just studying God’s word.

Acts 4:13 tells us a striking detail about this moment. It says, “when the religious leaders of Israel “saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus” (nkjv). These simple fishermen seemed to know more and act with more courage than the religious professionals. How did this happen? It’s plain and clear: The disciples had been with Jesus. They were boldly sharing their faith. They knew the Scriptures. They were men who prayed.

Then there’s Moses. When God called him to lead the people of Israel out of slavery in Egypt, Moses gave some really good reasons why he wasn’t the right person for the job. But what it all came down to was this: “I am nobody” (see Exodus 3:11). In plain talk, he was just an everyday guy. But look what God did with that everyday guy. He used him to set a whole nation free.

This should really give you hope and lift your spirits if you think of yourself as just an ordinary person. Maybe God hasn’t called you to be a pastor, or a missionary, or to some other ministry job. But God can use you, too. It’s clear that He’s looking for ordinary men and women to bring the gospel message to others.

The apostle Paul wrote, “We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves” (2 Corinthians 4:7 nlt). God truly specializes in using broken and imperfect people to get His work done and make His will happen. He sees good things in us that we can’t even see in ourselves. He knows exactly what we’re capable of and how to help us reach our full potential.

God can use you right where you are, and the chances before you are many. You’ve got a mission field where you work, where you go to school, and in your own neighborhood. You are God’s representative, and He is calling you to go into this world and speak up for Him. God isn’t looking so much for what you can do on your own as He is looking for you to be ready. So, make yourself ready for Him and just watch what He does.

How can you be bold in sharing the gospel in your personal mission field? Think about it. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being available.
