Biblical Context
Paul wrote the book of 1 Timothy to his young mentee, Timothy. Timothy was leading the church in Ephesus, a challenging place with lots of false teachings. Paul was like a spiritual father to Timothy, guiding him on how to lead, teach, and maintain good order in the church. In this letter, Paul often gives Timothy practical advice on faith and living. This verse, 1 Timothy 4:8, comes in a section where Paul is warning Timothy about false teachers who push strict rules, often about diet or marriage. Paul contrasts physical discipline, which has some benefit, with spiritual discipline, or godliness, which brings rewards that last forever, both in this life and the next.
Key Word Study
The word ‘profiteth’ in our memory verse comes from the Greek word *opheleo*. It simply means to benefit or to gain something useful. When Paul says bodily exercise ‘profiteth little,’ he isn’t saying it’s worthless. He’s saying the benefits are limited, mainly to this earthly life. But godliness, true devotion to God, gives you advantages in everything, holding promises for right now and for what’s coming after this life.
While it’s good to pay serious attention to big parts of our lives like our career, family, time with God, and ministry, we shouldn’t forget our health. You’ll find this truth in scriptures like Acts 27:34: “Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.” And also in 1 Timothy 5:23: “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.” Sometimes, without even knowing it, we put our health at risk, which can lead to problems from small issues to really big ones.
THE IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY LIFE
Even though God made us spirit beings, just like Him (Genesis 1:26-27: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”), He also gave us physical bodies (Genesis 2:7: “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”). And you know what? He cares about our physical health (Jeremiah 30:17: “For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.”).
So, it’s our job and our way of showing God thanks (Romans 12:1: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”) to make our health a priority. Why? Because our bodies are God’s temple (1 Corinthians 6:19: “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”). They’re also the containers that let us exist and interact with this physical world. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to fulfill God’s purpose for us (Genesis 1:28: “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”; Genesis 2:7: “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”).
Why You Need to Take Care of Your Body:
- Good health is what God wants for you. (Jeremiah 30:17: “For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.”)
- You can’t serve God well if you’re not healthy. Consider the man delivered from demons in Mark 5:18-20: “And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done unto him: and all men did marvel.” His deliverance gave him the ability to go and serve God by sharing his testimony.
- Good health brings God glory. (Acts 3:8-10: “And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God: And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.”)
- It makes you more productive in everything you do. (Proverbs 31:17: “She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.”)
- Living healthy makes you feel better about yourself. Remember Daniel and his friends in Daniel 1:12-15: “Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.” They felt better and looked better too!
- It costs less than being sick. Think of the woman with an issue of blood in Mark 5:25-26: “And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse.”
- You need to be healthy to finish what God started for you. (Philippians 2:25-28: “Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants. For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.” Epaphroditus’s health was vital for his ministry.)
HOW TO LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE
First, involve God in your desire for health:
- God will make sure you’re healthy when you obey Him and turn from evil (Proverbs 4:20-22: “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.”; Proverbs 3:7-8: “Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.”).
- You’ve got to renew your mind. Bad thoughts and mindsets can really hurt your health (Romans 12:2: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”).
Next, here are practical steps you can take:
- Eat smarter. Minimize sugar and processed foods. Eat more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables (Genesis 1:29: “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”; Daniel 1:8: “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.”; Daniel 1:12-15: “Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.”).
- Drink plenty of water. Make sure you’re drinking lots of it, especially during the day.
- Get regular exercise. This helps your blood move all through your body (1 Timothy 4:8a: “For bodily exercise profiteth little…”).
- Move around more. Don’t sit in one spot for too long; it’s not good for you.
- Go outside and reduce screen time. This helps prevent eye strain and keeps your brain working well.
- Be careful what you consume. (Proverbs 23:1-3: “When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.”; Proverbs 23:20-21: “Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.”; 1 Corinthians 10:31: “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”).
- Stay away from strong drinks and alcohol. They damage your organs and can really hurt your reputation (Proverbs 20:1: “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”; Proverbs 31:6: “Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.”).
What you eat or drink is your first medicine. Take good care of yourself.
