Scripture for Today

John 19:25-27 (KJV): 25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

Message

Biblical Context

John, often called ‘the Beloved,’ was born around 6 AD in Galilee. He wasn’t just any disciple; he was one of the sons of Zebedee, making him James’s brother. Before Jesus called him, John was a fisherman, working on the Sea of Galilee. His mother, Salome, also plays a part in the New Testament story. John lived a long life, passing away around 101 AD in Ephesus, Asia Minor. He left behind a big legacy, writing the Gospel of John, three letters (1st, 2nd, and 3rd John), and the Book of Revelation. His writings show a heart completely dedicated to love, truth, and the amazing hope of eternal life.

Key Word Study

When you hear John called ‘the Beloved,’ it really means something special. The Greek word for ‘beloved’ used to describe him is agapetos (ἀγαπητός). It doesn’t just mean liked; it means someone who is loved, very dear, and highly valued. It shows a deep, unconditional love, the kind Jesus had for John. It tells you that John held a unique place in Jesus’ heart, not because John earned it in a human way, but because of God’s amazing choice and divine connection.

Who Was John The Beloved?

John wasn’t always the ‘beloved’ in the gentle way we often think of him. Jesus even gave him and his brother James the nickname ‘Boanerges,’ which means ‘sons of thunder’ (Mark 3:17). You can see why when you look at some of their early actions. They were definitely concerned for Jesus’ honor, but sometimes they let their passion get the best of them. You see this when they wanted to call down fire on a Samaritan village that didn’t receive Jesus (Luke 9:53-55). That’s a fiery spirit! John also showed he was ambitious for spiritual honor and glory when he and James asked to sit at Jesus’ right and left hand in His kingdom (Mark 10:35-40). But Jesus used all of John’s raw passion for His good work, shaping him into the man of love we know.

His Lasting Impact

John’s life was full of incredible moments with Jesus, showing his unique place among the disciples.

  • He was one of the three closest disciples who got to see Jesus transfigured on the mountain (Matthew 17:1). Can you imagine seeing Jesus in all that glory?
  • John was also there as one of the three witnesses to Jesus’ deep struggle in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:37). He saw Jesus’ pain up close.
  • He had access to some private information from Jesus that others didn’t get (John 13:23-26). It’s like Jesus trusted him with secret truths.
  • When Jesus was on the cross, John was the only disciple there with the women and Mary, Jesus’ mother. Jesus specifically told John to care for His mother from that moment on (John 19:25-27). This shows an incredible bond and trust.
  • People generally believe he was the ‘other disciple’ who ran with Peter to see Jesus’ empty tomb on Resurrection morning (John 20:2-4). He was always eager to see Jesus, even after death.
  • John was among the 120 people who waited in the Upper Room and were baptized with the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 1:13-14; 2:1-4). He received power from above!
  • You also see him with Peter, healing the lame man at the temple gate (Acts 3:1-3). He was right there, helping people experience God’s miracles.
  • He also traveled with Peter to Samaria, where they ministered the Holy Spirit baptism to the new believers there (Acts 8:14-17). He was a key part of the early church spreading the gospel.
  • Later in life, he was exiled to the Isle of Patmos (Revelation 1:9). But even there, Christ appeared to him and showed him ‘things which must be hereafter’ (Revelation 1:1-3; 4:1). He received visions about the future of the world.
  • Throughout all these experiences, John was always known as the disciple ‘whom Jesus loved’ (John 13:23). It’s a title that says a lot about his special relationship with Jesus.

What John Teaches Us

John’s life gives us so much to learn and apply to our own walks with God. He wasn’t perfect, but he was always growing and committed.

  • You should be zealous for good works and for God’s work. Like John, who stayed faithful even in exile (Revelation 1:9), we can’t get tired of doing good (Galatians 6:9). Keep pushing forward for what’s right.
  • Be loyal and ready to help others. John’s loyalty to Jesus led him to take care of Mary (John 19:25-27). We’re called to carry each other’s burdens too (Galatians 6:2).
  • Care about God’s honor and glory, not your own. While John initially wanted glory for himself (Mark 10:35-40), he learned to put God first. Everything you do should be for God’s glory (1 Corinthians 10:31).
  • Stay close to Christ, even when things are hard. John’s exile to Patmos wasn’t easy, but God had more for him there (Revelation 1:9). Remember, God works everything out for your good when you love Him (Romans 8:28).
  • Be hardworking and resourceful. John was a fisherman, a skilled worker, before Jesus called him (Mark 1:16-20). He then used his abilities to write five books of the New Testament. You can use your gifts and skills for God’s kingdom too.

Prayer Points

  • Father, give me a heart that chases after You with unwavering passion, just like John the Beloved. Let me be found at Your feet always, in Jesus' name!
  • I tear down every spirit of fear and timidity that tries to hold me back from Your divine assignment. Lord, release Your boldness into my spirit now!
  • Holy Spirit, build in me a loyalty to Jesus that nothing can break. Let me stand by Him, even when others walk away, even at the cross!
  • Lord, purify my desires. Let my zeal be purely for Your honor and glory, never for my own selfish ambition, in Jesus' name!
  • Open my spiritual eyes and ears, Father. Show me the 'classified' truths and deep revelations You want me to know, just as You did for John on Patmos!

Daily Declaration

I am a beloved child of God, chosen and deeply valued. I am filled with a holy zeal and unbreakable loyalty to Jesus Christ. I stay close to Him, ready to serve and receive the hidden truths He wants to show me. I use my gifts and strength for His glory, and I walk in His perfect plan for my life, no matter what comes my way. I am His, and He is mine!
